Pixel To Stitch

How can we use modern design principles to improve the typography of cross stitch, which is one of the earliest forms of rasterized media? Designing both digitally and physically, I aim to make sense of the relationship of two very different forms of media that share the inseparable bond of grid confinement.

I think it is vital for designers to understand their roots. Using inspiration from the process work of type pioneer Susan Kare, I have designed a typeface that is meant to be cross stitched. I want to inspire designers to try out a form of art that is very different and much more meditative than their normal work, and also encourage designers to think about how they can also use interdisciplinary design in their own practice. I stitched my modern take of a cross stitch font sampler, with examples of different thread weights and how they affect opacity in work. I also cross stitched a QR code that sends the viewer directly to my fontstruct account, where I made the font, along with additional characters.
